Aromatherapy In Clinical Settings To Improve Care And Outcomes.

Posted on

Essential oils are a new tool in holistic nursing care; with various hospital units in the US, Europe, and around the world establishing aromatherapy practices to improve patient in-hospital experiences.

Texas Health Fort Worth is setting the gold standard in the US. Nurses at the hospital are required to be a certified clinical aromatherapy practitioner (CCAP), a course offered by R.J. Buckle Associates, to initiate and oversee an aromatherapy program in their hospital unit. The hospital has run small pilot studies monitoring the effects of essential oils, and currently utilizes essential oils on a case-by-case basis on patients in units with a CCAP. In their Cardiac Care unit, nurses monitored the use of lavendin, bergamot, and ylang ylang to help patients achieve better sleep.

Intermountain Healthcare, a not-for-profit system of 23 hospitals, educates their patients on "medical aromatherapy"; and supplies their nurses and physicians with lemon, lavender, and peppermint essential oils for use on patients during inpatient procedures to help soothe signs of nausea and calm the body.

Generally regarded as safe with low to no side effects, aromatherapy is slowly gaining traction as the best complement to conventional treatment to improve patient quality of life in hospital settings. The leading desired behavioral or physical outcomes in patients are to reduce signs of stress in the body, encouraging a restful sleep, and to reduce nausea. Essential oils that have sedative, nervine, anxiolytic, and balancing therapeutic actions are most often selected for hospital settings. Essential oils have a strong action on the central nervous and immune systems; making them the perfect choice to reduce pain and stress responses in the body "", encourage better sleep "", reduce nausea and feelings of unease "", and uplift mood and attitude "".

These clinical observations are revealing positive results in cases where aromatherapy has been utilized in hospital units as a complementary care tool. Essential oils are also starting to become used as a tool to minimize bad odors and for behavioral outcomes in clinic staff, such as to uplift and re-energize after long shift hours.
